Bicycle riding is a healthy and fun leisure activity that many Alabama residents enjoy every single day. Some use their bicycles strictly for exercise, while others use them for transportation to and from their jobs. Bicycle riding, however, does not come without its risks. Indeed, cyclists and automobile drivers alike must do everything they can to avoid being involved in a dangerous and potentially fatal accident.
In one case, for example, two Alabama bicyclists were hit by a car outside Morris on a recent Saturday morning. Both cyclists were rushed to the hospital with critical injuries. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred along Highway 31 at the corner of Morris Majestic Road at approximately 6:30 a.m.
Investigators believe that the driver who collided with the cyclists had been traveling southbound on Highway 31. Another vehicle was traveling ahead of that driver and it changed lanes to avoid the cyclists. However, the other driver did not notice the cyclists and slammed into them from behind.
Both cyclists, a 48-year-old man and 55-year-old man, hail from Warrior. They suffered critical injuries in the collision. The driver, on the other hand, did not suffer injury. The current conditions of the bicyclists is unknown at this time.
Hopefully, both cyclists experience a full recovery and this does not turn out to be a fatal accident. Also, it is hoped that this event will serve as an example of how important it is for Alabama drivers to keep their eyes on the road and to pay attention to traffic in all directions while operating a motor vehicle. Indeed, numerous car accidents occur due to distracted and/or inattentive driving. Drivers should also be aware that if they cause a distracted driving car accident, they can be held liable for damages in court.
