Brain injuries can occur as a result of many different things. While sometimes the injury is nobody’s fault, other times another person can be blamed. Regardless of how the injury is incurred, the results can be devastating. One man recently shared his experience recovering from a brain injury on National Public Radio.
Following striking his head on a counter as well as a stone floor, the man was unconscious for approximately 10 minutes during which time his wife summoned an ambulance. After he was taken to the hospital he was diagnosed with a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury.
While his injury was classified as “mild,” it nonetheless took some time for him to return to normal. The man, who described himself as old, spent a week in the hospital being observed and another week at a rehabilitation center. At the rehab center he rested for 21 hours and had occupational, speech and physical therapies the rest of the time. He had to relearn how to brush his teeth and walk without falling over. He also played brain games. While after the passage of several months he is certainly doing better, he said he is still experiencing side effects from the fall.
Recovering from a brain injury can be time consuming and expensive. When the injury is the result of an accident that is caused by another person or entity, the person with the brain injury may be able to recoup damages via a personal injury lawsuit. A successful case could make things easier for them as they address the side effect of the injury both in the near and distant future.
