Could gender play a role in brain injury recovery?

There is no question that brain injuries can be devastating to those who suffer from them. This is true regardless of the circumstances surrounding the brain injury. While researchers are always looking for the best way to treat the potentially debilitating injury, it has recently become clear that in at least one area, women’s brains respond differently than those of men. That area is in recovering memory.

For reasons that are currently unclear, men generally seem to be able to recover their memory faster than women following a concussion. This would suggest that women should receive different treatment than their male counterparts.

This is information is the result of research conducted in Taiwan and published online in the journal Radiology. Researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging to look at the brains of 60 individuals. Half were women and the other half were men. Half of each gender had suffered brain injuries while the other half had not.

All 60 individuals had brain scans a month after the injury as well as another six weeks later. At the point of the latter scan, the area of the brain responsible for short-term memory did not recover as quickly in women as it did in men. Long term it is believed that following one injury the brains of both men and women fully recover.

This information could lead to women being ordered to get more mental and physical rest during their recovery.

Brain injuries can be the result of many activities including assault, playing sports, falls or car crashes. When the incident is the result of actions taken by another party a personal injury lawsuit could be appropriate.

"They took a case that others would have stayed clear of.."
I have the utmost respect for Rip Andrews and the lawyers at MRB Law. They took a case that others would have stayed clear of because the issue of state immunity was involved. Through determination and unwavering commitment they were able to a find resolution to an extremely difficult matter.

"They...brought justice to my family through a multi-million dollar verdict ."
These lawyers took a complicated issue, revealed the truth in a way 12 jurors unfamiliar with the topic could understand, and brought justice to my family through a multi-million dollar verdict. They were able to relate my “invisible” medical condition to the jury better than I can to my own friends. And because of that, the jury hugged me and cried with me when it was all over. That meant more to me than any amount of money.
