What is listeria?
Listeria is a bacterium that can contaminate food items. It causes listeriosis, which is an infection that can be very dangerous, especially to infants, women who are pregnant, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the symptoms of listeriosis include:
- Muscle pain or neck stiffness
- Fever
- Stomach and intestinal problems
- Diarrhea
- Headaches
- Confusion
- Convulsions
If you or a family member experiences these symptoms, you should see a doctor to determine the problem. If it is listeriosis, you will need treatment as soon as possible. While treatment is often successful, listeriosis can cause death if untreated, or if the person affected is elderly or has additional medical issues.
