What is Listeriosis?
Listeria (or Listeriosis) is an infection caused by the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. Typically, people get this infection when they eat something contaminated with the bacteria. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the people most at risk for Listeriosis are:
- Pregnant women
- Newborns
- People with a compromised immune system
- People ages 65 and up
Pregnant women are at the greatest risk for Listeriosis: 10 times more likely than the rest of the population. Learn more about protecting yourself and your baby.
Know the signs and symptoms of Listeriosis
The symptoms of Listeriosis include diarrhea, fever, stiff neck, headaches, muscle aches, confusion and convulsions. In pregnant women, however, the symptoms are usually fever, muscle aches and fatigue.
If you consumed any of the recalled vegetables, it’s important to be aware of the symptoms. Typically, it takes one to four weeks for symptoms to appear, so don’t dismiss these symptoms if it’s been a few weeks since you ate the potentially contaminated vegetables.
