Ford Motor Company is recalling as many as 2.15 million Ford and Lincoln vehicles in the U.S. because they may have faulty door latches. Important: your vehicle may have been recalled for this problem before, but you should check if it is on the recall list. Some previous recalls may not have resulted in a proper fix.
According to Ford, the faulty door latch could allow the door to become unlatched while the car is in motion. That could be potentially very dangerous, but the auto maker says it is unaware of any accident or injury reports related to the faulty door latch.
What vehicles are included in this recall?
The recall involves cars from the model years 2011 through 2015, although not every vehicle from a specific model year will be included in the recall. The recall includes:
- 2011-14 Ford Fiesta
- 2012-15 Ford Focus
- 2013-14 Ford Fusion
- 2013-14 Lincoln MKZ
- 2013-15 Ford Escape
- 2013-15 Ford C-MAX
- 2014-16 Ford Transit Connect
- 2015 Ford Mustang
- 2015 Lincoln MKC
Their inclusion in the recall depends in part on where and when the vehicles were manufactured. Owners should inspect their door latch date codes online to confirm whether the latch has previously been repaired properly. If you are uncomfortable with this inspection or receive uncertain results, you can ask your dealer to inspect your vehicle and perform any necessary repairs or replacements.
Ford’s reference number for this recall is 20S30.
Again, this recall is being repeated because some door latches were not fixed properly the first time. The previous recall reference numbers were 15S16 and 16S30.
If you would like to know whether your vehicle is among those affected by this recall, get your car’s 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and enter it into NHTSA’s recall website. Your VIN is available from several locations in your car, including just inside the driver’s side door and at the base of your windshield on the driver’s side. It is typically also found on your car’s registration card and may be shown on your insurance card, as well.
