Victims of severe burn injuries whether from a work-related incident or motor vehicle accident face lifelong challenges. Their lives changed at a moment’s notice often because of the negligence and recklessness of another person or their employer.
The initial treatments for burn injuries may include skin grafts, reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries and many hours of physical and occupational therapy. But these steps merely represent the beginning of a burn victim’s challenges.
Career struggles and everyday challenges
Other challenges a burn victim may face include:
- Additional medical issues: There may be an assortment, many of which are surprising. Medical researchers have found that burn-related injuries may boost the risk of infections, musculoskeletal disorders, depression, nervous system disorders, diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease.
- Career-related challenges: Physical limitations may obligate you to find a different job. In certain situations, you may be unable to carry out physical duties.
- Limitations on everyday activities: You likely must have sessions with an occupational therapist to find the best ways to dress and feed yourself as well as drive a car. Household chores such as vacuuming, sweeping and washing dishes may prove difficult. And embracing your children may lead to physical pain as well.
- Continuing struggles with physical and mental health: Expect chronic physical pain that may be controlled through painkillers and therapy. Your mental health also remains vulnerable. The slightest reminder of the accident may lead to complications such as post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety.
As a burn victim, you may encounter some of these issues. Please understand that, but also follow the guidance of medical and health care providers.
The importance of perseverance
You cannot change what happened. As you recover, though, you understand the importance of perseverance.
