Some people are able to enjoy a full recovery but others are not so lucky and are only able to regain some of the functionality that they once had. New research results have been published that shed new light on the recovery process for patients with traumatic brain injuries. Science Daily reports that the information was published in a journal of the American Academy of Neurology. It details information collected in a study. The bulk of the participants sustained their TBIs in either motor vehicle accidents or in falls.
The researchers found that people with traumatic brain injuries are likely to also experience problems with their sleep-wake cycles. Instead of being able to remain alert and awake throughout the day and sleep soundly through the night, TBI patients experience sleepiness during the day and the inability to remain asleep all night long. They further found that an improving sleep-wake cycle correlates to a healing brain injury.
